Ras Utsav – Ras Festival at Kamarpukur

Annual Ras Purnima festival celebrated at the historic Ras Mandir in Kamarpukur.

The Ras Utsav (Ras Festival) is one of the oldest and most culturally significant celebrations at Kamarpukur. Held on the full moon night of the Kartik month (*Ras Purnima*), this festival celebrates the divine love play (*Ras Leela*) of Lord Krishna with the Gopis, as described in the Bhagavata Purana.

The Historic Ras Mandir

At the heart of this festival is the famous *Ras Mandir* (Ras Mach) of Kamarpukur — a historic structure that dates back centuries. This brick-built terracotta mandir was built by local zamindars in memory of the Ras festival tradition. The young Gadadhar (Sri Ramakrishna) would visit this Ras Mandir often, and the festival left a deep impression on his spiritual imagination.

Sri Ramakrishna and Ras Utsav

Sri Ramakrishna had a deep personal connection with this festival. As a child, he would participate in the local Ras celebrations with great enthusiasm. He would sometimes go into states of divine absorption (*samadhi*) during the celebration, overcome by the sight of the beautiful decorations and the devotional singing.

The Ras Mandir is one of the must-visit spots in Kamarpukur, and the Ras Purnima celebration makes it even more special.

Festival Programme

On Ras Purnima, the Ras Mandir and surrounding areas are decorated with flowers and lights. A special puja is performed at the mandir. Traditional *kirtan* (devotional singing) continues throughout the night. Local folk artists sometimes perform the *Ras Leela* — a theatrical enactment of Krishna's divine love play.

A small fair (*Mela*) is also held in the village, where local artisans display their crafts and local foods including the famous Sada Bonde sweet.

How to Attend

Check the exact date of Ras Purnima each year as it follows the lunar calendar. Travel to Kamarpukur as usual. No special accommodation booking is typically needed for this festival as it is shorter and less crowded than the Janmotsav.
