Tarakeswar, located in Hooghly district about 50 km from Kamarpukur, is one of the most revered Shiva pilgrimage sites in Bengal and indeed all of eastern India. The Tarakeswar Shiva temple, housing the ancient Shivalinga known as Baba Taraknath, draws millions of pilgrims every year — particularly during the Sravana month (July–August) when thousands of devotees walk barefoot carrying water from the Ganges to offer at the Shivalinga.

The Sacred Temple

The Tarakeswar Shiva temple is believed to be over 300 years old. According to local legend, the temple was established after a divine vision revealed the presence of a self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shivalinga at this location. The presiding deity, Baba Taraknath (meaning the Lord of Liberation), is believed to fulfil the wishes of sincere devotees, particularly those seeking healing from illness.

The temple complex includes:

  • The main Taraknath Shiva temple with the ancient Shivalinga
  • The sacred Dus Ghata tank where pilgrims take a ritual bath
  • The Annapurna temple
  • The Kali temple within the complex
The temple architecture is a beautiful example of Bengali temple style, with a distinctive tiered shikhara (tower) rising above the main sanctum.

The Sravana Mela

The most spectacular time to visit Tarakeswar is during the month of Sravana (approximately July–August), when the famous Tarakeswar Mela takes place. Devotees from across Bengal — and indeed from Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha — undertake a barefoot pilgrimage to Tarakeswar, carrying sacred Ganga water (*Jharer jal*) to offer at the Shivalinga. This tradition, known as Bol Bam, creates an extraordinary visual of thousands of saffron-clad pilgrims walking along the roads for days.

Sri Ramakrishna and Tarakeswar

Sri Ramakrishna's connection to Tarakeswar is well documented. He visited Tarakeswar on several occasions during his lifetime and had deep reverence for Baba Taraknath. One of his most famous stories involves a visit where he went into a state of deep spiritual absorption at the temple — a characteristic that defined his spiritual life.

Getting There from Kamarpukur

By Train: The Tarakeswar railway line connects Howrah to Tarakeswar directly (about 1.5 hours). From Tarakeswar, take a bus or car to Kamarpukur via Goghat (approximately 50 km, 1.5 hours by road).

By Car: From Kamarpukur, take the Kamarpukur–Goghat–Tarakeswar road. The journey is about 50 km and takes approximately 1.5 hours. The road passes through scenic rural Bengal.

Combining with Kamarpukur

A popular 2-day itinerary: Day 1 at Tarakeswar (arrive by train from Kolkata, visit temple, proceed to Kamarpukur in the afternoon). Day 2 at Kamarpukur and Jayrambati. This way you combine two great pilgrimage sites of Hooghly–Bankura in a single trip.

🗓️ How to Combine with Kamarpukur Visit

Many devotees combine Tarakeswar with Kamarpukur on the same trip. Take the Tarakeswar train from Howrah, visit the Shiva temple, then continue by road to Kamarpukur (about 50 km, 1.5 hours). This route is popular as both are Hindu pilgrimage sites in the same region.
